It is located in the northwest of the country, along the Sava river, at the southern slopes of the Medvednica mountain. Zagreb lies at an elevation of approximately 122 m (400 ft) above sea level. In the last official census of 2011, the population of the settlement of Zagreb was 686,568, while the total population of its administrative area was 792,875.
The wider Zagreb metropolitan area includes the City of Zagreb and the separate Zagreb County with a population of 317,642, bringing the total metropolitan area population up to 1,110,517. It is the only metropolitan area in Croatia with a population of over one million.
Its favourable geographic position in the southwestern part of the Pannonian Basin, which extends to the Alpine, Dinaric, Adriatic and Pannonic regions, provides an excellent connection for traffic between Central Europe and the Adriatic Sea. The transport connections, concentration of industry, scientific and research institutions and industrial tradition underline its leading economic position in Croatia. Zagreb is the seat of the central government, administrative bodies and almost all government ministries.

Written documents first mention Zagreb in 1094, with finding of Diocese. University University of Zagreb is the oldest in Croatia and one of the oldest in Europe. It was founded in 1669 Till present more than 200,000 students have graduated, more than 18 000 took Master’s Degree, more than 8,000 took Doctor’s Degree. Scientific – teaching – art work is performed at 28 faculties, 3 art academies, expert Teacher Academy and on Croatian Studies. Scientific Institutions There are 22 institutes in areas of social and natural sciences. Zagreb is the seat of HAZU – Croatian Academy of Sciences and Art. Culture City of Zagreb is responsible for 38 cultural institutions which include 10 city museums, most significant of which are Zagreb Municipal Museum, Museum for Arts and Crafts and Museum of Contemporary Art. Health City of Zagreb is the owner of Sveti Duh General Hospital, Ambulance, 7 specialized polyclinics and 13 medical centers. |
